Just over a month into his Major League Baseball career, Athletics' rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left hip flexor. The injury occurred during the tenth inning of Saturday's extra-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, when Kurtz advanced to third base and appeared to tweak his hip. After being removed from the game and sitting out Sunday's lineup, the team hoped he might recover without an IL stint. However, following further evaluation, the Athletics made the move official on Tuesday, retroactive to May 25.

Kurtz's injury comes at an unfortunate time, as he was beginning to find his rhythm at the plate. Over his last five games, he went 7-for-17 (.412) with four home runs, raising his season batting average from .208 to .245 and his on-base percentage from .259 to .315. His improved plate discipline was evident, with five walks and five strikeouts during that span.

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay expressed cautious optimism about Kurtz's recovery, stating, "We're hoping that it's not a long timetable. We got him evaluated, took Monday to further that evaluation and just didn't feel like he would be able to get back within the 10-day time frame. But there's hope and thought that it could be a shorter stint than a longer one."

In response to Kurtz's absence, the Athletics have called up outfielder Drew Avans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Avans, 28, has been impressive in the minors, batting .328 with four home runs, 34 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 48 games. This marks his first promotion to the major leagues.

Additionally, the team acquired left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. Newcomb, who previously played for the Athletics during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, had a 3.95 ERA in 12 games with the Red Sox this year. To make room on the roster, the Athletics designated left-hander Matt Krook and right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment.

Kurtz's rapid ascent through the minor leagues and into the Athletics' lineup has been a bright spot for the team. Drafted fourth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, he quickly progressed from Single-A Stockton to Double-A Midland, and then to Triple-A Las Vegas. In just 32 minor league games, he showcased his power and plate discipline, leading to his MLB debut on April 23, 2025.

As the Athletics navigate Kurtz's absence, they will look to Avans and other players to step up and fill the void. The team remains hopeful for a swift recovery and return for their promising young first baseman.
